Unique pan loader boosts efficiency for SA Recycling

For seafaring vessels, quick port turns and constant uptime are critical. SA Recycling moves mountains of scrap metal aboard seafaring vessels in 25% less time using a newly designed skip pan loader made from Hardox®500 Tuf.

The Port of Los Angeles exports nearly 1 million tons of scrap per year. A leader in the metal recycling and processing industry, SA Recycling is committed to achieving environmental sustainability through robust equipment performance and peak efficiency. When identifying improvement opportunities, the company’s nearly 20-ton skip pan loader presented heaps of potential.

The old loading pan was thick, heavy, and had multiple weld joints. Not only did it put a strain on the mobile harbor crane’s hydraulic system. It also caused frequent repairs and downtime, impacting the entire loading process. As the maximum weight per swing is 70 tons and the pan weighed 20 tons, the maximum scrap weight was limited to just 50 tons. To increase payload, SA Recycling had an urgent need to find a solution that was lighter, longer lasting, and more efficient. They turned to Hardox® Wearparts center Cutting Edge Supply (CES) and were introduced to Hardox® 500 Tuf, the world’s number one abrasion resistant wear steel.

For SA Recycling, this switch meant numerous benefits:

5 tons less weight, fewer welds and reduced maintenance

25% less time to load outbound ships

eliminated expensive downtime due to repairs

“Our downtime has been reduced substantially. I like this pan loader. It’s doing her job… Hardox® 500 Tuf, I love it!”
